Northwood reserves got their first win of the season thanks to a fine overall team performance, and but for a couple of good saves by the Camberley keeper Sayers and the poor condition of the pitch they could easily have hit double figures, after dominating for most of the first half and large portions of the second. New manager Derek Lewis has got the defence tightened up and playing more as a unit now and it showed with a strong confident defensive performance that frustrated the Camberley front line throughout the game.

Camberley’s best chance came in the second minute when a corner wasn’t cleared and it fell to striker Marriott on the six yard box. His point blank shot was saved by Garry Malone and was immediately cleared up field to Rashid Oddabi, who raced through but was denied by a good save from Sayers. Northwood settled down after the earlier scare and began to attack with precession passing and pace that Camberley were finding difficult to cope with. On nine minutes Chinua Cole ran on to a clever pass from midfield, and with the keeper caught off his line he calmly lobbed the ball over him to put Northwood 1-0 up.

Four minutes later Cole almost scored again when he found himself one on one with the keeper but he was denied by the feet of Sayers. Woods continued to dominate the game until the 27th minute when Marriott found himself through on goal, but his effort was saved through a good defensive double block by Adam Pepera and Garry Malone. Northwood continued to attack and Camberley were struggling to cope with some great attacking work from Hicham Abdellah and Rashid Oddabi. The pressure paid off in the 41st minute when Cole ran on to another good through ball and slotted home the second goal on his second attempt after an initial save from Sayers.

Just before half time a through ball from Cole found Abdellah in space, and he calmly slotted home to send Woods in at half time 3-0 up. Woods made a change at half time with Freddie Brooks being replaced by Gabril Haither. Camberley came out fired up and dominated the first ten minutes of the second half and were almost rewarded with a goal from a deflected shot, but Garry Malone was able to change direction and push the ball out for a corner.

On the hour Derek Lewis made his second change, bringing on Beka Bekim for Jack Clark. Woods continued to work hard as a team and good pressure from Abdellah lead to a mistake by the Camberley defence that let the Woods man free in the box. Abdellah chipped the ball over the home keeper, but was pulled down by Sayers before he could run around him and finish the attack. The referee didn’t see anything wrong and waved play on.
With 15 minutes to go Woods made the final substitution, with Jeff O’Sullivan coming on for Cole; and with almost his first touch of the ball O’Sullivan threaded a ball through to Bekim who picked it up on the left edge of the box, dropped his shoulder beat the Camberley defender and curled the ball into the top right hand corner of the net to put Woods 4-0 up. Northwood’s fifth goal came in the 82nd minute when Abdellah was put through on goal from another clever pass from midfield and he calmly slotted home his second goal of the game. A few minutes late Bekim was through on goal again with just the keeper to beat. However, his delicate chip from the edge of the box was saved by Sayers who push it over the bar for a corner.

In the ninetieth minute Woods were unlucky to add to their goal tally when Harry Wright floated a cross into the path of O’Sullivan, who volleyed just over the bar. Overall, boss Derek Lewis should be happy with a good team performance, a clean sheet, five good goals and three important points.
